I was born in southwest Mississippi during a raging thunderstorm in late August, 1967.

My mother still says they should have picked up on that as a sign of things to come.

My interest in writing started at an early age, during those rare times when I actually stopped talking long enough to put pencil to paper. However, it wasn’t until I was 13 that I realized writing could be a career when I finished third in a national poetry contest.

I can still remember the sound of the angelic choir that emerged when I opened the envelope that contained my prize…a check for $100. (There is some dispute over whether a choir of angels actually performed or my medication was wearing off.) At that point, my ambitions solidified…I knew what I wanted to be “when I grew up”.

So naturally, I became a radio announcer.

As I started in my career, I was amazed at how much writing is involved in the broadcasting world. Over the course of a 20-plus year career in radio, I have won awards for writing commercials, producing commercials and have been published in various trade magazines on the subject of how to write and produce effective commercials.

During the same two decades, I have had a weekly newspaper column (which won the “Best General Interest Column” award from the Mississippi Press Association), written and drawn a weekly comic strip, and ran an internet-only radio station devoted to MMORPG video games.

Currently, I’m enjoying a freelance career in writing, with several semi-regular paying clients and various “one-shot” contracts with others, along with continuing my broadcast career as the morning show host of a 100,000 watt FM country station in Mississippi and serving as the operations manager for our company. I have a beautiful wife who I met while she had her hand in my mouth one day, and two wonderful boys who have everything figured out already.

Just like I did at that age.
