What’s The Least-Successful MMORPG?
Most people would say that World of Warcraft is the most successful MMORPG.
Why? Because of WoW’s success…with ten million subscriptions, it’s the pinnacle of success in the MMORPG world. This fact leads to endless proclamations of “the next WoW-Killer” every time a new MMO is announced.
I’m as tired of the “Who’s the next top dog?!?!11?!” crap as the next guy, so I want to
propose a different search that should be more fun…what’s the least successful MMORPG? It would be easy to just say “Dark & Light”, but I have a few rules for this search:
- The game must still be active.
- The game must be open for new account signups.
- The game must not have announced its impending closure.
Those three facts all apply to World of Warcraft, so they will all apply to this search as well. Why impose those restrictions? Because we’re not looking for the least-successful MMO of all time (looking at you again, D&L)…we’re looking for the one that’s currently the least-successful.
Look at it this way…one day, WoW will close. If no other game has eclipsed what it has at it’s peak, then it will still stand as the most successful of all time…just not the most successful at that time.
Now, taking all of that into account, riddle me this…what’s the least successful MMORPG, and why?
I have my own answer to this one, which I’ll give you later this week.

I’m going to have to say wow. I’ve been playing 2 years and still can find something cool to do in game! I don’t play much bu the subscription remains! blog engage and blogging in general has taken up the majority of my free time but who cares I already have the lvl 70 anyways right…w waiting for 70 – 80 to be released!
I would have to say world of war craft! It’s really epic and bring me back to the D&D days!
Nice to see you submitting again

The first thing that popped into my head was Vanguard. I mean ignoring the bad server launch there’s been little in the game that’s actually been taken/used by any over mmorpg when really there’s a few things in there that would be quite interesting/fun about it that I can’t experience in other games (Diplo system comes to mind). When you also combine with the fact it’s now not too bad to play and has had a ton of development poured into it but yet still doesn’t have a population that’s really noticable it leaves the simple question of why? It never really rose up to expectation and never really will now because of all the new mmorpgs coming out.
