Apparently oft-troubled MMORPG Saga of Ryzom may be about to start its third life. The game fell under the control of the French courts after developer Gameforge went into receivership, and the courts have been accepting bids on the game…a process that rabid French-court-watchers (helpful tip: Don’t sit next to rabid French-court-watchers on the bus…you don’t know where they’ve been) expected to take a year or more.
However, word has now come out that a winning bid has been chosen by the Paris commerce tribunal, from a company called Spiderweb International, a totally unknown company (and according to some, not Spiderweb Software). Speculation is circulating that this is simply a front company for former developers to reclaim their game.
However, this isn’t over yet.
A group of Ryzom players had banded together to bid on ownership of the game’s assets the last time Ryzom almost shut down (and yes, it’s been an interesting year or two for this game), and have the intention of bidding again this go-around. However, due to the French courts being…well, French, they apparently didn’t dot an “i”, or cross a “t”, or slap a hooker with a croissant or something, since the player group will now have a chance to bid (due to not being notified of the bidding). Only one problem…they don’t have the money.
The good news: the liquidator has confirmed there has been a mistake during the procedure, he should have informed us. We can thus attack the decision, the liquidator is proposing to restart the procedure from scratch if we offer more.
The issue is that, right now, we don’t have enough to make such an offer.
What will happen? Will the game return to its former playerbase with their characters intact? Will the game relaunch from scratch? Will it simply complete the process of fading away started when the servers went down? And what about Marlena…will she ever resolve her feelings for Roman and John?
