Bioware Announces Star Wars:Knights of the Sith Online
Bioware has finally announced their above-top-secret MMORPG project, and as expected, their recent deal with Lucasarts does play a part in the project.
Star Wars…’nuff said.
The delay in any information on this game may set a record…back on March 13, 2006 (over two years ago), Bioware issued a press release stating that their MMORPG was in the works.
BioWare Austin has already begun work on a Massively Multiplayer Online roleplaying game (MMORPG) title; the new game will mark BioWare’s debut in the Massively Multiplayer Online space.
Since the MMO has been in development behind closed doors for so long, it’s much closer to completion than most would expect, according to Dr. Ray Muzyka, CEO and General Manager, BioWare & Vice President, Electronic Arts.
“Our entry into the MMORPG space is almost ready for the beta process, and I fully expect everyone to be wowed by the same quality and attention to detail that made Bioware a household name. We learned alot while making Shattered Steel all those years ago, and we’ve applied those lessons to our new virtual world.”
As is usually the case with Bioware, not many additional details were forthcoming, aside from one tidbit thrown in by Muzyka at the end of the interview.
“We realize that we’re in a unique position…we’re the first company to ever launch an MMORPG using a licensed property that has already been an MMORPG. However, we have studied the current Star Wars MMORPG offering, and have been told to do our best to duplicate the experience, to some extent, that players are used to with the current offering.”
While this may send shivers of doom down the spines of some SWG veterans, the few specs that were released do sound interesting:
- Five playable classes (Jedi, Dark Jedi, Padawan, Sith Apprentice, Clone Trooper)
- Level-based gameplay
- No crafting, eliminating the need for item decay
- No player housing
When asked if space combat was going to be included in SW:KotS, Muzyka replied “Not at this time, no.”
Stay tuned for more details!
