Bartle’s Gamer Categories Go To The Dogs…And Cats

Jeff Freeman has a link up to an interesting discussion going on over at the Zen of Design Blog, featuring (of all things) data-mining of the GoPets user base.

(If you click that link, it’s your fault…don’t go blaming me.) I believe the data they found apply to the Metaplace project that Raph Koster is putting together. To wit:

Thus, fruit tree buyers (and theoretically, Achievers) are 44X more likely to be profitable customers than your average schmuck. At least in GoPets.

Another eye-raising stat came from the Content Creator, one of the few ‘Explorer’ elements in an otherwise purely Socializer game. What they found were that these people were 16X(!) more likely to be active players, and 4X more likely to be heavy users than standard active players. Thus, content creators (and theoretically, Explorers) are 64X(!) more likely to be profitable customers than your average schmuck. At least in GoPets.

Hmmm…admittedly, one sample does not comprise a full discovery (nor a single datum fair a curve…wow. I’ve got to get out more), but let’s see; allowing your player base to create their own content and feel a sense of achievement leads to larger profits?

Sound like any projects that are underway to you?

The line to buy Areae stock forms to the left. No shoving, please.

(Note: Just in case you think they weren’t paying attention to what they found, look what’s now in GoPets.)
