The Revenge of the Friday Free-For-All

Another week, another credible conglomoration of crap from around the internet, now with 100% of the daily recommended dose of “WTF?!?”
- Is the videogame market financially healthy? Does a night elf need less clothing when she dances?
- If you’re going to steal something from a virtual world called “Habbo Hotel”, shouldn’t you just concentrate on the towels like a normal person?
- Hellgate:London is off to a rocky start…they’re performing a character wipe on non-American servers after one week.
- Hellgate:London…just keep playing. We’re working on this whole “character wipe” thing. Nothing to see here. Enjoy advancing your character until we figure out if you’ll have to do it over again or not.
- Hold on…no character wipe for Hellgate:London. (It’s been that kind of week at IAH Games, apparently…mentally wish their devs well, and maybe we can cut down on the number of random acts of frustration-fueled violence they perpetrate before Thanksgiving.)
- Okay…who tipped off the BBC about Runescape? (Spoiler alert: It apparently involves “questing and monster bashing”.)
- Ever wondered how MMORPG’s work? Boy, is today your lucky day, because HowStuffWorks.com has an interesting feature on just that.
- Jeff Freeman. His blog. A post titled “MMO RPGs Need Permanent Death?” C’mon…this should keep you busy for a week at least.
- According to Gamedaily.com, The Discovery Channel is doing a five-part series on the history of video games, with the final installment on December 19th looking at online worlds. Looks like I’ll have to whip up a Discovery Channel version of The Inhibitor Drinking Game.
- Gizmodo has yet another great link up…did you know that the Cal State marching band has a video game halftime show?
And finally, FFA quiz-time! Read this excerpt of a review:
“…given the vastly superior quality of the graphics in a game like “Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction,” currently available for the PS3, “Galaxy” (Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii) looks old fashioned and lifeless.”
- a well-balanced comment from a reviewer
- another honest opinion, or
- part of Ben Fritz’ review of the Wii’s Super Mario Galaxy on the Variety website, sponsored by Sony.
Lag-O-Rama…Wii report, you decide.
