Sometimes, It’s Not The List That’s Interesting

Sometimes, It’s Not The List That’s Interesting

As you may have noticed, I’ve managed to fight back the urge to do an “End of 2007″ list. It’s not that I don’t want to…it’s just that there’s already more lists of that type floating around than there are viruses on Paris Hilton’s toilet seat.

However, the post about such a list at MMOCrunch from the beginning of December is fascinating to me. It’s a brief piece, lamenting the fact that there’s only one MMORPG on IGN’s “Top 100 Games of All Time” list (World of Warcraft at number 83), leading MMOCrunch to say

This begs one to question whether any of the 30 selected editors were MMORPG players. Surely a genre of gaming that has recently becoming more and more popular would have more than 1 game on a list of 100. Even a nod to Ultima Online, the first popular MMORPG, would at least get a mention, but this was not the case.

To me, this is a valid point (and one I’ve complained about here just recently)…MMORPG’s usually seem to get the short end of the ballot when it comes time to compile these lists. But what’s the most fascinating to me about the post at MMOCrunch is the comments section. Keep in mind, this is MMOCrunch…this site isn’t aimed at XBox players…it’s aimed squarely at MMORPG players. And yet, this is the type of comments they’ve received so far:

Ian: Thats because MMORPGs are stupid and an utter waste of time.

wally: mmo’s are not really games at all, but a second job created to eat your money and keep you going and going achieving the same at all times. Regular games let you achieve more.

If I wanted to spend money a month to play an MMO Id just rather burn the money. At least I would get more out of it.

XCWarrior: How about they are all the same and don’t deserve to be on the top 100 list? I’m amazed WOW was even in the top 200…

Richard: MMORPG is not gaming as Jeremy from Purepwnage.com said, it is a hobby. I fully agree with that until I see a mmorpg with real game elements beyond simple quests and grinding.

Now these are the comments on a site devoted to MMORPGs…what the hell would it have looked like on a forum devoted to Halo?

This just goes to show that no matter what your opinion, if you’re on the internet, there are people just dying for the chance to be on the other side. It’s “comment PvP”.
