National Grouch Day - Hib-Style

For those of you that don’t know any better, Monday October 15 is officially National Grouch Day.

Looking sharp!

In the interest of staying up on the latest world developments, I have made the editorial decision to be a complete bastard in today’s post. “But Hib,” I hear you asking, “whatever in the world of MMORPGs could you find to be grouchy about?”

You’re new here, aren’t you?

Mindless grind.

Style over substance.

“133t” PvP nutjobs.

“Carebear” anti-PvP nutjobs.

In fact, any “I’m only for one extreme and you can shove your face in a blender if you don’t agree” nutjobs.

Human beings have a tendency to believe that they are correct, and that everyone that doesn’t agree with them is full of horse crap. This is a psychological defense mechanism, developed over the years to make sure that when Ugg-Boo the caveman decided to cook his food, he wouldn’t listen when everyone told him he was insane because fire is bad. Believing in the correctness of your own opinion in the face of dissent is a human trait that is responsible for a large chunk of what little advancement the human race has managed to scrabble together between wars.

Of course, it’s also the basis for most of the wars.

Let’s make it clear…there is, and will never be, one game or playstyle that appeals to everyone. It’s impossible. Which brings me to my point, and since it’s a holiday, I’ll throw in not one but two points:

  • Gamers need to stop spending so much time griping because there are some people that don’t like to play the same way they do. If you sincerely believe that other people should not have different likes and dislikes than you, no one’s going to want you around in their game community…in which case you’ll wind up playing single-player games anyway.
  • Game development companies (note that I didn’t say “developers”) need to realize that they are not going to make a game that appeals to everyone, and therefore should decide what kind of game they’re going to develop, and then make it the most fun game of that type.

One thing to remember, whether you’re a player, a game publisher or a developer…

It’s hard to appeal to everyone when you’re not very appealing to anyone.
