MMORPG Cellphone Action

No…really. Say hello to Shadow of Legend, what developer SmartCell calls “the world’s first High-Performance, Cross-platform MMORPG targeting mobile devices and PCs.”

Come on…you knew this was coming sooner or later, right?

Unfortunately, just before Tim could enter the instance with his guild, he ran off the road in real life and hit a marmoset.

Shadow of Legend uses the isometric perspective, which is hardly surprising considering the lack of mobile devices that come equipped with high-end graphics cards. Having said that, it actually looks quite good for a game designed to be played on a pocket device.

On their official forums, there’s an interesting thread asking “Where do you play SoL?”. A sampling of some of my favorite answers so far:

  • sit on the toilet
  • watch my basketball team trailing by more than 20 points within 5 minutes to go in the fourth quarter
  • Work!

Of course, if MMORPG gaming for your cellphone catches on (and why not?), I have one hope, and one hope only…that we wind up with a special edition of Teamspeak or Ventrillo for your mobile device, because how else would you get voice communication for a game you’re playing on your phone?

(Inhibinote: I’ll bet you five credits and a free self-guided tour of Dark & Light that someone says “Hey! VOIP for cellphones! Somebody should do that!” after reading the last paragraph.)

  1. Wow. VoIP on cell phones? I’ve been using it on mine for about 3 years now, lol.
I’ve also recently devised a way to access teamspeak while out buying groceries as well.

Nothing new, but I guess I’m just lucky to live somewhere where these are normal things :-)..

Thank you for pointing this out. Just the perfect thing for a ‘Well, WoW doesnt do this’ moment at the bus stop, when the teenagers are amassing! But I guess mamma and pappa would just reach out and add a data plan on their little babies handsets :-)
