I Wanna Play Lucifer

Next month, the PS3 will enter the MMORPG arena, thanks to Q Entertainment’s console version of their microtransaction-driven game Angel Love.

The Indian Angel is already my favorite.

Gamers-Creed has some details:

Released for the PC in December of last year, Angel Love Online places you in Eden, the land of angels. Once you’ve created a character and mastered the basics of the game through the Angel Academy tutorial mode, you select one of four kingdoms that will serve as the setting for your adventure. You play as a protector of angels, building up your own story as you meet other characters and monsters.

To me, this entire thing begs the question…can it be considered a good choice to launch the first-ever microtransaction console MMO on the console that has sold the fewest number of units? Of course, as you can see from the official Angel Love site, they at least have the sales pitch down:

The young angles designated by God and particularly trained in the angle garden, comes to the earth to execute their quests in rescuing Eden. The lovely fantasy world is consisted of 4 unique kingdoms, and players can pickup one of them to devote to.

Since they’re designated by God, then I want to be a right angle. They rock! (I assume that you don’t form a group or party, but a geometric shape…I can see the “Looking for Triangle” spam now.)

Will this be the first huge success story for console MMORPGs? Well, with the combination of broken english, microtransactions and the console with the weakest market of the current generation, how can it not succeed? More importantly…if Angel Love for the PS3 fails, will that set back the push toward console MMOs?

My answer…I don’t think so. Microtransactions are the future of the genre’ to some extent…however, I don’t think the subscription model will ever completely go away, and I’m still not convinced that they can become a success on console games.

  1. Great blog! I don’t even play any online games, yet I was entertained! Keep up the great work.

  2. Heh…thanks, knotgypsy. I just enjoy MMORPGs, and the entire culture around them.

Now, I just have to start my master plan of getting you (and everyone else) hooked on the genre’, and I’ll be one step closer to…well, not world domination, but at least I’ll have someone to group with.
