Holy Suspended Dev Cycle!
Over at 1Up.com, they put up an interesting analysis of the status of Marvel Universe Online, the big blockbuster MMORPG being designed by Cryptic, the studio that recently sold the rights to their popular City of Heroes franchise to NCSoft. Now, however, no one is saying anything about MUO, to the point where Cryptic states in their FAQ that they sold the rights to CoH and now will have more time to devote to “our soon to be announced first-party projects.”
What does this mean to you? Not a whole hell of a lot, to be honest. The official MUO site hasn’t been much more than some promo video and still shots for over a year, and if you judge by the comments left on that 1Up story, the X-Box community wasn’t exactly waiting with bated breath for this. Only time will tell if the game has been as illegitimately killed as Cap.
Of course, SOE is developing a DC Comics-based MMORPG as well, so the “superhero MMORPG with recognizable characters you can’t play” concept is still alive…for now, which gives comic book gamers the hope that one day they, too, can become Arm-Fall-Off Boy.
Don’t get me wrong…I’ve got high hopes for both of these games (since I am a comics geek at heart), but due to the potential for disaster here, the most charitable stance I can take is “wait and see”.
