Gaming Makes You Stupid
Okay, where do I begin? Well, let’s start at the source, Advanced Media Network, reporting on a study done by Taipei Veterans General Hospital on the effects of playing video games on your brain:
The study results claim that blood flow to the brain is decreased in general while playing video games, and that violent games “exacerbate this effect.” Furthermore, the frontal lobe of the brain and the anterior cingulate gyrus are primarily at risk for damage. For those of you not holding some kind of advanced medical degree, these parts of the brain control thinking, speaking, decision-making, impulse control, and emotional behavior, meaning playing video games is now essentially the equivalent of binge-drinking, minus the hangover.
I’ll overlook the sub-headline to the article “…and your sex life,” since it’s not mentioned anywhere in the study (Remember, kids…sensationalistic headlines get traffic, whether they have anything to do with the story or not!) and instead focus on a different aspect of this.
This study (as usual) makes video gaming out to be a horrible life-threatening problem. However, how does it compare to watching television? Reading a book? The answer: we have no clue, because those studies wouldn’t get funding for the hospital, especially if it was shown that television had a similar effect.
And as to the “gaming hurts your sex life” comment…well, that doesn’t explain this:
Although, to be fair, I’m not sure there is an explanation for that.

And sitting on the couch watching TV all night does what?
