Facebook: The MMORPG
Last week, Patrick over at ironicgamer.com posted about a new Facebook MMORPG. Well…sort of. Although I think the concept of Facebook would make a good MMORPG, where you grind out levels by leaving vapid comments for other players, take linkback quests from NPC’s, and spend half of your playtime trying to not get hacked, this is actually an MMORPG for Facebook…Mobile Weapon:Battlestations.
It’s a lot like driving on Sepulveda in L.A. during rush hour, except with less risk to your vehicle. This game is apparently taking the Facebook world by storm. And yes, despite my extreme lack of a Facebook page, I spared no expense when it came time to sign up for a free account to check this out. Therefore, may I present…Inhibitor the Pirate, sailing the Mega Uber Deathpile 3000.
This game is of the “You get so many turns per day” variety (i.e. Fallen Sword), but still seems to be a nicely done time-waster. And yes, there is PvP, etc, so technically it would fall under the broad heading of MMORPG, depending on who is classifying.
This is the type of thing that Raph Koster’s Metaplace is going to allow anyone to design…in fact, he’s specifically mentioned being able to put your game designs on MySpace and Facebook. Behold, my friends…the wave of the future.
How much longer will it be before we see the era of “boutique MMORPG’s” dawn?
I give it until Thursday, tops.
